The largest problem with converting videos for mobile is file size: getting the file to a size suitable for download, without reducing the video and sound quality too much. 3Gp files are the most common format, but avi files and mpegs are also popular.

Our friends at Gibson Group have kindly shared some of their tips regarding converting video files, as they have managed to create high quality video files that run for two minutes, with a file size under 1MB:

"The software we use for encoding for web/phone and TV is Episode Pro.

For Mobile Phone clips we use QuickTime 3g format with H264 codec which gives the best result as well as Mpeg4 and H263.
For audio we use aac mono at 8kbs.

Frame size is QVGA with a datarate of 32kb/s for video.

These settings are a minimum for acceptable quality for 3gp but also are useful for working within telco datarate/file-size restrictions."

Thanks to Bevin and the crew at Gibson Group for that info!

If you're after a free program that does a similar job, we've had success with Acala's Free 3GP converter

With video quality set to Normal or High, you can create a 3gp file of good visual quality, at a reasonable file size for download (voeveo's maximum file size for video content is 5MB). However, the sound quality is not as good as with Episode Pro, (we recommend using aac format) and the file size is not as small as it would be with a professional product.

Also zamzar can convert files into various formats for free, although this will only work for smaller files, so you wont be able to convert straight from DVD as with the other programs.

Hope this helps you video Sellers out there. Happy uploading!
